About Binn
Binn is the study-first app blocker built to solve the student attention crisis. We turn doomscroll time into active-recall learning.
Why we started Binn
Every student recognizes the cycle: you sit down to study with honest intent. You open your laptop, look at a dense lecture deck or textbook, and immediately feel the activation barrier. Within minutes, your hand reflexively reaches for your phone, opening Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube before you’ve made a conscious choice.
Modern algorithms have made mindless entertainment completely frictionless. Learning, on the other hand, requires deliberate cognitive effort. Trying to fight this asymmetry with brute willpower alone almost always fails.
Traditional productivity tools prescribe the wrong cure. They lock you out with rigid countdowns or popups that you end up ignoring, bypassing, or uninstalling out of frustration. We started Binn because we realized the solution isn’t to demand superhuman discipline—it’s to change the incentives.
What the product does: the study tax
Instead of telling you to never open social media, Binn introduces constructive friction. We call it The Study Tax.
Whenever you open an app you’ve marked as distracting, Binn pauses the app before the feed loads and presents a quick active-recall question generated from your actual course material.

When you answer correctly, you earn real unlocked minutes to use your apps guilt-free. If you don't feel like answering the question, you put your phone down and return to your work. In either outcome, you win.
How it works under the hood
1. Upload your actual syllabus and notes
You drop in lecture slides, PDFs, syllabi, or summaries. Binn’s parser breaks your materials down into key concepts and produces bite-sized structured lessons with high-yield multiple choice questions—including mathematical formulas and scientific notation.
2. Choose which apps to gate
You select the apps that drain your attention—Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, X, or mobile games. You stay in control of what is blocked and when.
3. Active recall in micro-doses
Instead of trying to force a grueling three-hour study marathon, you get 15 to 20 active-recall reps naturally throughout your day. Retrieval practice locks concepts into long-term memory far more effectively than passive re-reading.
4. Earned, guilt-free screen time
Every correct answer adds earned minutes to your session bank. When the earned time is up, Binn gently re-engages the pause.
Our philosophy
Your curriculum, not generic trivia
Generic flashcard databases don’t help you pass specific university exams. Binn only tests you on what you upload—your professor’s slides, your assigned readings, and your curriculum.
Constructive friction over shame
Punishing yourself for checking your phone builds resentment. Binn doesn’t judge; it just creates a healthy exchange. You want to scroll? Pay the study tax first.
Privacy by design
Binn only detects when a selected blocked app is launched in order to present the study screen. All app detection runs locally on your device. We never inspect your messages, track your keystrokes, or monitor your personal screen activity.
Availability
Binn is currently available worldwide on Android via Google Play. An iOS version is in active development.
